Art Report Nr. 1: Needs for Sale
Date: 26. November 2007
Project: Needs for Sale
Artist(s): Christine & Justin Gignac
Web: www.needsforsale.com
Rating: Buy
Summary: According to their website, Christine & Justin are a 20-something couple living
in NYC, wanting a lot of things. They make paintings of the things that they want, and sell them at the price of the painted item.
Now they have just launched a sister site, called "Needs for Sale". The idea is identical, but it is about
things that they want others to have, in particular those in need. According to Justin, "All of the paintings on the site will be for specific charities with 100% of the sales going to the charity. For example Habitat for Humanity says $100 donation buys a kitchen sink. So we'll paint a kitchen sink, sell it for $100 and then donate all $100 to them. Hope to be able to donate $10,000 to charities before Christmas."
Justin is widely known as the creator of the successful NYC garbage project. The artists have repeatedly delivered new conceptual ideas in a very intriguing way. The entry price is low, and
the buyers gets additional karma because they make the world a better place. An easy decision for
Salathé & White to issue a buy rating.
Update (27. November 2007): All paintings were sold within a day.
